Abstract

● The MANUTEX project aims to design, test and clinically validate a pair of intelligent textile-mechatronic gloves suitable for hand rehabilitation in stroke patients. The MANUTEX system includes a pair of textile gloves with embedded electrodes for electrical stimulation of the muscles, and a mechatronic system to guide the hand movements and providing also sensorial information, as well as an intelligent control accounting for the balanced control between the FES-induced movement and mechatronic guidance.

General objective

● The general short term objective of the MANUTEX project rely on the clinical validation of a final product mechatronic textile intelligent gloves for hand rehabilitation in stroke people (MANUTEX), manufactured in an industrial environment. On long term, the project aims to obtain the conformity certification for the MANUTEX system and to release it as a maketable device estimating at least 5% more stroke people recovering their hand functionality by means of the MANUTEX applied rehabilitation therapy.

Specific objective

● Design, manufacturing and testing of textile gloves with embedded (incorparated) electrodes for electrostimulation, with mountings for mecatronic subsystems (drive/bowden cables, sensors, etc.);

● Improvement of mecatronic components of MANUTEX system (hardware and software) for connection with textile gloves with embedded (incorporated) electrodes;

● Integration of MANUTEX system and testing under laboratory conditions, including complete control and display software solutions. Also, there are considered the analytical elements for quantifying the expected improvements in stroke patients and which can be used in clinical evaluation;

● MANUTEX system validation by testing in real conditions of use (clinical environment).

Stages

Stage 1 - Year 2020 - Design and testing of textile glove technical solution with embedded (incorporated) electrodes, testing MANUTEX system components and MANUTEX system validation under laboratory conditions;

Stage 2 - Year 2021 - Realization and testing on components of MANUTEX system in laboratory conditions – final. Validation of the system in clinical environment. Iterations to improve the system;

Stage 3 - Year 2022 - Development of user documentation and technical specifications preparatory for CE certification.

Estemated results

● A new device, MANUTEX, aiming to improve hand rehabilitation in stroke people, which has been industrially manufactured and clinically validated;

● Finalized documentation in order to apply for CE certification in accordance with ISO13485 regulation;

● Scientific publications: 4-6 papers WOS indexed and 2 accepted papers to be published in high impact factor journals;

● Support for at least 3 PhD students to finalize their PhD thesis in close relation to the MANUTEX project proposed research.
